Whenever I discover pages on the internet that inspire me, they become the new big thing. Most often, those pages are art/design/fashion/food related. This one breaks from that trend, and I don’t even know how to categorize it.
butdoesitfloat is a collection of stunning images paired with quotes. The quotes range from the literary to the scientific. The images - also varied, featuring work by photographers and painters, or vintage posters, graphic design and so on - bring life to and offer interpretations of the quotes with a sense of intellectual drama.
I have been checking the site daily, specifically when contemporary artists are featured. (We can never get enough art.)

I first spotted this image on a post on 100 Layer Cake (an adorable wedding blog - surely fueling my need to plan a wedding of my own, and maybe my sister will even let me do hers…). It was a great little post about trying head scarves, and this particular woman’s striking look stuck in my head. I’ve been halfheartedly emulating it this week - making a turban out of a scarf I picked up at a thrift store - so I decided to dream shop for the perfect elements to create this entire look.
1. First, start with a killer scarf. Even though it’s fall, there’s nothing wrong with injecting a little color into things! The Zaden Silk Twill Scarf by Diane von Furstenberg fit the bill. It’s bright, and the graphic print will add character to the turban.
2. Secondly, a camel hair jacket. The classic, sophisticated shape of the jacket balances out the exotic colors and style from her head wrap. I liked this one from Ralph Lauren.
3. I’m a makeup junkie, and am always snooping around on Sephora. Today, I saw this limited edition Dior eyeshadow palette. I absolutely love the animal print - I would probably rarely use it because the print was too pretty!
4. When I think of oversized sunglasses, I think of Hollywood starlets dodging photographers. Instantly, I think of Gucci shades. This pair has a simple, classic shape with all the drama!
5. Although it’s not part of the photo, I wanted to add a little more color to the page and find a pair of shoes that would complete the look. Ballerina flats seemed fitting, and these Gabrielle Rocha flats are feminine and basic, but come in a wide variety of colors - so hard to choose!
